Normal
Out of the Ordinary
Originally called North Bloomington, the Town of Normal has established an identity all its own, thanks in part to its largest and most recognizable institution — Illinois State University. But beyond the college campus, Normal boasts a proud legacy as a manufacturing leader, first for Diamond-Star Motors and Mitsubishi, and now for Rivian Automotive. Residents will discover fantastic public schools and numerous parks and green spaces providing space to stretch out and relax, plus numerous opportunities for shopping and dining, ranging from the revitalized Uptown to the Shoppes at College Hills.
Gladly We Learn & Teach
Established in 1857 as Illinois’ first state university, Illinois State University has played an integral role in Normal’s identity. Quite literally, actually — the town’s name comes from the original name of the college, Illinois State Normal University, which was at the time a common naming convention for teacher-training institutions. Today, ISU enrolls more than 22,000 students across a variety of academic disciplines; in addition to its original program, education, ISU is renowned for its nursing, business, and arts programs.

The Main Street of America
Spanning more than 2,400 miles from Chicago to Santa Monica, CA, Route 66 has brought countless visitors through Normal since the highway was established in 1926. Though decommissioned in the ‘80s, the Mother Road lives on today through the preserved historic sites around Normal, echoing legends from another time. Sites like Ryburn Place at Sprague’s Super Service, Carl’s Ice Cream, and Normal Theater still invite visitors from around the world to experience these one-of-a-kind stops just as generations of cross-country travelers did before.

The Uptown Experience
Having undergone significant transformation in recent years, the effects of an extensive revitalization are evident in Uptown Normal. Streets and sidewalks, completely rebuilt in 2009, are bustling with activity. Stores and restaurants — both old and new — are full of life while the dazzling marquee of the historic Normal Theater invite guests to enjoy arthouse and cult classic films as well as live events. Full-service hotels adjacent to the ISU campus provide convenient lodging for campus visitors in addition to accommodating events of all sizes. Spend a day discovering the Uptown, including locally owned businesses, the three-story Children’s Discovery Museum, and a variety of restaurants.
